Protos (Proto-)

Literally "the first." Aprotos was the chief administrator of a group of monasteries, e.g., Mount Athos and Meteora (qq.v.). However, "proto-" as the first part of a title could mean simply the highest-ranked member of a category of officials or dignitaries. For example, the protosebastos was the highest-ranked sebastos (q.v.). The protonotarios was the chief of a group of notaries, e.g., of the emperor's (q.v.) personal notaries. It can also indicate a high-ranking palace official or dignitary with various specialized duties, such as the protovestarios (q.v.).
